SCC announced Friday its students will take online classes for the remainder of the spring semester which ends April 29.

The community college will transition to a distance learning model after all South Carolina public colleges and schools were closed through March 31 by an executive order from Gov. Henry McMaster to limit the community spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) from direct personal contact.

The closure impacted all five SCC locations which support economic and workforce development in the Upstate by providing education and training for 6,000 students in Spartanburg, Union and Cherokee counties.

The SCC Executive Council also announced a telecommuting work plan for all employees from Friday, March 20, through March 31. Only employees designated as essential to college operations will be allowed on campuses.

“Our top priorities are the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff and to continue teaching our students during this unprecedented time,” Spartanburg Community College President Henry Giles said. “We have incorporated distance learning instructional models so that our semester continues with as little disruption as possible. Although COVID-19 brings many new questions and challenges each day, we are doing everything within our power to adapt and continue serving our students.”

SCC spring break will remain unchanged and run from March 30-April 4.

Registration for summer and fall semesters at SCC is ongoing.

Giles said SCC business office has suspended the $15 credit card convenience fee to encourage online payments.
