Community Involvement and Volunteerism

A great place to begin searching for one-time or ongoing volunteerism opportunities is through the United Way of the Piedmont. Because the United Way of the Piedmont serves Spartanburg, Union and Cherokee Counties, you can work with the volunteer coordinators to find service opportunities that address not only the needs of individuals in your area, but also your own needs around your class schedule and other commitments!

Below are just a few ways you can get involved through the United Way’s agencies in need of volunteers:

  • Spend time tutoring an adult to help him prepare for the GED exam
  • Help a family learn how to prepare and follow a household budget
  • Do some office work – file papers, answer phones, and direct office traffic
  • Serve on the Board of Directors for a local non-profit organization
  • Teach someone how to read
  • Work with animals at a local shelter
  • Help kids in an after school program with their homework
  • Paint a room, do some landscaping, or repair broken equipment at a local shelter
  • Sort or repair donated items at a local thrift store
  • Greet patients at a medical clinic and help them complete paperwork

United Way's Volunteer Connections program can match you with a great volunteer experience! Fill out the form online at www.uwpiedmont.org/individual_group_volunteer.php or call the United Way office at (864) 582-7556.

Another option is to check out www.spartanburg.com/community/volunteer.html where you’ll find links to many volunteerism opportunities in the Spartanburg and surrounding areas.

Winyah Community Hospice
We need volunteers to help with our patients. Volunteers can sit with patients to give their families a break. They can help with administrative/ clerical support. They can do special projects of any kind including sending cards, bereavement support, or whatever talent they may have. Our hospice volunteers are trained regarding hospice philosophy, volunteer roles, communication skills, the psychosocial and spiritual aspects of hospice care. On average, most volunteers give 4 to 8 hours a month. Of course, any time is appreciated. For those who desire to make a difference, are caring and compassionate; hospice volunteering can be very rewarding. We are also able to give references.
