Spartanburg Community College (SCC) recently received a Commendation of Excellence award for an exemplary safety record from the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce at the 2011 Safety Program Recognition luncheon on Wednesday, March 14.

“I believe this award is a testament to our faculty and staff for being conscientious toward safety for our students, visitors, colleagues and ourselves,” said Ray Switzer, SCC director of facilities. “SCC only had one minor recordable accident in 2011, and while this is a good record, it is our College objective to have zero accidents.”

The SC Chamber of Commerce awards the Commendation of Excellence to companies and organizations across South Carolina who have achieved a commendable lost workday case rate during 2012. This includes any occupational injury or illness that results in an employee being unable to work a full assigned work shift.

The SCC Campus Safety staff takes great measures to inform personnel and students on safety policies and tips, emergency response and management, inclement weather and crime prevention. “We provide all of our policies, procedures, and safety information on our website and in student publications,” said Chief André Kerr, SCC’s director of public safety. “We also regularly send out email and text alerts when necessary to notify everyone on campus of any safety concerns.”

“The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce is proud such conscientious companies and organizations are operating in our state. They deserve credit for their ongoing commitment to keeping their guests, clients and employees safe,” said Otis Rawl, president and chief executive officer of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce.
