Start with the FAFSA
To determine if you are eligible for federal, state, or institutional aid programs (to include the Free Tuition Initiative and the Live to Chase Initiative) you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be completed annually. The application is available on October 1st of each year for the following school year. The school year consists of the fall semester (begins in August), the spring semester (begins in January) and the following summer semester (begins in May).
When will I find out what I'm eligible for?
Once you complete your FAFSA your information will be process by Federal Student Aid (FSA) and the results will be sent to the college. The college will review the information to determine if additional information or documentation is needed to complete your financial aid file. You will receive an email (sent to your college email address) directing you to your student portal where you will be able to see what you need to provide. Once your financial aid file is complete it will be evaluated to determine what types of aid you are eligible to receive. An email will be sent to you once you have been awarded. Make sure your IRS Tax Return has been filed
The FAFSA uses information from your federal income tax return. It will use your tax return from two years back. For example, the 2023-2024 FAFSA uses your 2021 income tax return.

Apply for an FSA ID
You and your parent(s) (if dependent) should apply for an FSA ID if you do not already have one (only needs to be done once). This can be done directly from FAFSA on the Web. The FSA ID is important because it gives you access to your FAFSA record and serves as your electronic signature.

Complete Your FAFSA
Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online using FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.gov

Be Admitted to the College and Complete your Financial Aid File
Be admitted to the College and complete your financial aid file by July 14th, 2023, which is the financial aid priority deadline to be considered for all financial aid funds available. -
Keep Up with Student Communication
Communication with Students - most of the communications from the financial aid office will be sent to your SCC email account. You should review your emails and announcements regularly through the MySCC Portal to ensure you have the latest information about your financial aid status.

Review Your Federal Student Aid (FSA) Communications
Once the FAFSA is submitted, you should review any communications you receive from FSA. The SCC Financial Aid Office will receive an Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) will provide information about your processed FAFSA. -
Check Your Student Email for Additional Information Needed
If additional information is needed to complete your financial aid file, you will receive an email to your SCC email account. Items needed can be viewed through the MySCC Portal in Student Self-Service under the Financial Aid tab. Submit the requested information as soon as possible and make sure all documents are signed and dated. -
Corrections & Additions Sent to Federal Processor
After receipt of all requested information, it may be necessary for corrections to be sent to FSA. This step will add to the amount of time needed to process your finanial aid. -
Financial Aid Awards
If you apply in time and are eligible, you can use financial aid award(s) to pay tuition and fees and to make purchases in the book store. It depends on the amount of aid you are eligible to receive as to whether all your changes can be covered. Please be sure to review the Financial Aid Award Letter Inserts to see what charges your aid can cover.
If you do not apply in time, you will be expected to pay for you charges on your own. If you are awarded aid at a later point, you will be reimbursed based on your eligibility.

A student may request to "opt out" and use an allowance to urchase books and supplies elsewhere by submitting to the SCC Business Office a Request to Opt Out form by the first day of class for each semester you wish to use an allowance. Lottery Tuition Assistance (LTA) cannot be used for books and supplies. Funds available after tuition, fees, books and supply expenses have been paid will be disbursed by the business office.

Helpful Tips
- Be accepted for admission to SCC by the SCC Enrollment Services.
- Ensure your official high school transcript are sent to the SCC Enrollment Services.
- Ensure your IRS Tax Returns have been filed properly.
- Complete the FAFSA as early as possible
- When completing your FAFSA use the IRS Data Retrieval option to transfer tax information.
- Make sure all verification forms are signed and dated as requested.
- Respond quickly to all requests for information.
- Record any contact made with the Financial Aid office.
- Clearly print the your name and SCC ID number on all documents sent or brought to the Financial Aid Office.
- Remember to reapply for Financial Aid each year starting in October.
- Remember to check your SCC e-Mail account and announcements through your MySCC Portal
account.
