SCC Foundation Announces the Dr. Pamela Hagan Professional Development Fund for College
Faculty, Thanks to an Anonymous Donor
The SCC Foundation is pleased to announce the naming of the Dr. Pamela Hagan Professional
Development Fund for SCC faculty in honor of Dr. Hagan, an SCC faculty retiree who
served SCC students with profound commitment and dedication. Supporting and believing
in the mission of Spartanburg Community College, an anonymous donor has committed
$100,000 and initiated a matching challenge grant. To date, the SCC Foundation has
raised and endowed $40,000 of this fund, which is at the Spartanburg County Foundation.
"We are delighted to name this fund in honor of Dr. Pamela Hagan for her dedicated
service to SCC spanning over 25 years, and for her unwavering commitment to educating
students," explains Bea Walters Smith, executive director of Advancement and the SCC
Foundation. "Both in and out of the classroom, Dr. Hagan's career has focused on students,
helping them reach their academic and career goals. We hope SCC faculty will look
to Dr. Hagan's example and take advantage of applying for these funds to further their
teaching professional development."
The purpose of the fund is to provide resources to SCC faculty members to cover travel
and conference expenses focused on their professional development. Funds will allow
faculty members to attend conferences, enhancing teaching and professional skills
across all disciplines. Currently, three conferences are available for SCC faculty
to attend using this funding source: Teaching Professor, St. Louis; Virginia Master
Teacher, Hampden-Sydney University; and the National Institute for Staff and Organizational
Development (NISOD), Austin, Texas. Conferences that meet the purpose and spirit of
this funding may be added in future years as they are identified.
Dr. Hagan has demonstrated a rich history of involvement woven between community and
education through her 10 years as a counselor with Department of Social Services and
her 25-year tenure with SCC. She has been an active member of the community over the
years, serving on both the Spartanburg Area Mental Health Board and the March-of-Dimes
Committee for Walk America. In 1995, Dr. Hagan was selected for then Spartanburg Technical
College's inaugural David Pierce Department Chair, Head Leadership Award. She obtained
further recognition as a 1996 Woman of Achievement recipient from the Spartanburg
Business and Professional Women's organization. In 2002 she was awarded the South
Carolina Technical Education Association Educator of the Year, Faculty Category, and
in 2011 was selected as the SCTEA Educator of the Year, Administrative/Manager Category.
Dr. Hagan's diverse contributions to SCC have included serving as the Retention Counselor,
Student Activities Director; Assistant Dean of Student Services; Psychology Instructional
Chair; and Dean of Instruction; all which led to being the recipient of SCC's 2013
Wall of Fame award, a distinguished honor citing significant contributions to the
college. While officially retired, Dr. Hagan remains true to serving students as an
adjunct faculty member teaching psychology at Tri-County Technical College. In the
words of her recent students, Dr. Hagan is described as being "very informative and
engaging," is always "more than fair," and takes the necessary time to reach today's
student.
The SCC Foundation is excited for the opportunity to meet the challenge of this gracious
$100,000 donation and is accepting donations. Tax deductible contribution can be made
