The History of SCC

Spartanburg Community College first opened its doors in 1963 as the Spartanburg County Technical Education Center, originally offering just ten programs and courses to 150 students. Within the first ten years, the student body had grown to almost ten times larger and the courses had already begun to shift and evolve. After receiving accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1974 and recognizing just how much they could offer their community, SCTEC became Spartanburg Technical College.

Over the next ten years, STC gained another 300 students and the curriculum continued to diversify, having developed 40 associate degrees, diploma programs, and the addition of custom-designed training programs through their Continuing Education Division. In response to the governor's 1988 Initiative for Workforce Excellence, STC developed the most expansive workplace basic skills training program in the state.

In 1990, STC launched the University Transfer Program and later linked with the World Wide Web in 1994, changing the College's trajectory forever. By 1995, STC's student body had exceeded 2,500 and their programs had continued to grow and evolve with the modern times. After the turn of the century in 2001, STC's Distance Learning Department offered its first two online courses. Today, SCC offers over 70 online courses every semester.

In 2004 STC opened the Associated Degree Nursing Program (ADN) and developed plans for a second campus in Cherokee County which would later open in 2007. Two years later, in 2006, STC aimed to rebrand itself with a name that better reflected its strong community focus. Consequently, the College emerged as Spartanburg Community College, proudly claiming the distinction of becoming South Carolina's only community college. From then on, our mission shifted towards improving economic opportunities for students and graduates; and positively contributing to the economic growth and development of the Upstate of South Carolina.

Since then, over fifteen years later, we've only continued to devote ourselves to that mission, opening numerous gardens, a teaching kitchen for our culinary students, implementing a 'Gateway to College' (a national dropout recovery program originally developed by Portland Community College) and starting a collaboration with the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) Partnership Office as a means to offer economic support to those residing in Spartanburg County and beyond.

We love our community, and we love South Carolina. With no intention of stopping or slowing our growth and progress, SCC has big plans for the future of our college and what we can offer those living under the South Carolina sun. It's never too late to start your education, and with so many opportunities out there, it's always great to be a Chaser.
