News Feature: SCC Foundation endows memorial scholarship for Blacksburg High grads
The Spartanburg Community College Foundation recently endowed a scholarship for Blacksburg High School seniors in memory of longtime teacher, coach and mentor Ginger Horton.
The Ginger Elizabeth Horton Scholarship will award $1,000 each year or $500 a semester to graduating students seeking an associate degree.
To qualify, students must graduate from Blacksburg High with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, complete their FASFA and submit an essay about their educational and career goals and a letter of recommendation from one of their teachers. Awardees must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher during their first year of college to receive the scholarship for the next academic year. Apply for scholarship
Horton, who taught physical education, science, psychology and coached girls’ basketball and softball, is remembered for the compassion and encouragement she offered her students. The scholarship was established by Horton’s friends and family to continue her work in supporting teens in the Blacksburg community.
“Scholarships are a gift to all involved — the donor, contributors and the recipients,” Bea Walters Smith, executive director of the SCC Foundation, said in a statement. “These funds are a gift to an individual wanting to learn and earn an education.”
