Paramedic Application Process

There is no GPA requirement; however, a GPA of 2.0 or higher is highly recommended to be successful with the academic rigor of the program.

Due to the intense nature of this program, students are advised to have a strong command of writing and reading comprehension in English. Students should have the ability to perform mathematical computations including, but not limited to, the use of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, ratios, and basic algebra. Students who do not possess strong reading, writing, and mathematical abilities may have difficulty completing this program.

Apply to Spartanburg Community College if you are not a current student. Students must be accepted to SCC before applying for the program.

All transcripts should be sent directly to Admissions if you are transferring classes. 

Be coded for the program, which an admissions specialist can assist you with:

• AAS.G-EMS for an Associate Degree
• CT.PMD for a certificate

Prerequisites set by SC DHEC Bureau of EMS:

• Have a high school diploma or GED
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Valid BLS card
• Be physically able to perform all of the tasks required of a paramedic
• Must maintain a current SC or National Registry EMT certification throughout the course.
• Must satisfy pre-screening requirements in reading comprehension and math using a standardized test from either an agency that does pre-screening, or by the authorized SC EMT training institution using the prescreening examination of their choice (i.e. HOBET, ACET, COMPASS, Work Keys, etc.) with a previously established passing score.
• Complete an approved Anatomy & Physiology course within the last 5 years prior to the start date of the program.
  • A&P is a pre-requisite to beginning Paramedic coursework, but not the EMT course.

• BIO 112
• BIO 210 & BIO 211 may be substituted for BIO 112
• NOTE:  Students cannot take BIO 215/ BIO 216 at Spartanburg Community College to satisfy the requirement.

Admission Packets should contain the following:

1. GPA Calculator
   • Download the calculator, enter your information, then print it.
   • You cannot include course work currently in progress.
   • Any required general education courses that you transferred to SCC must be entered with the final letter grade for that course.
   • Courses that receive Exemption Credit cannot be entered.
2. Unofficial SCC Transcript
3. Transfer Equivalency Report
   • Provide a Transfer Equivalent Report (TER) if you transferred any of the required general education courses into SCC; the TER can only be obtained from SCC's Records Office.
   • All official transcripts (high school and/ or college) must be on file in the Records Office for validation.
4. A copy or copies of the following if applicable:
   • Current CPR certification
   • Current NREMT EMT certification
   • Current SC EMT certification.
5. Documentation to verify the information you are submitting should accompany your completed forms as needed.

Important:

• • Complete all forms for the Admission Packet in their entirety.
  • Make a copy of all forms and documentation submitted in the packet for your files.
  • No forms or documentation will be returned to you from your submission.

Forms and supporting documentation should be submitted in a 9" X 12" manila mailing envelope that contains the following on the outside:

• Paramedic program admissions packet
• Your name
• Your SCC student ID #
• Your SCC student email
• Your personal email

Completed application packets must be hand-delivered to the location and by the deadline listed at the top of this page.

If you are mailing your application packet from out of town, the EMS Program Director must receive your packet prior to the due date.

Students submitting late or incomplete application packets will not be considered for the upcoming paramedic cohort. 

Qualified students accepted to the program will be notified by an official letter through their SCC email account ONLY.  The letter will contain further time-sensitive instructions, directions to accept your seat in the program, and detailed information regarding the mandatory program orientation. 

NOTE:  Failure to accept your seat or to attend paramedic orientation may result in loss of your seat in the paramedic program.

Applicants who do not initially receive an acceptance letter but are selected as alternates will be notified of their status via their SCC email once the acceptance letters have been dispersed.

Please do not call the college or stop by the Division Office or EMS Department to ask whether you received a slot. This information will not be released due to college privacy issues. Students will only be notified of acceptance status through their SCC email. 

If accepted, a mandatory program orientation will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at 9:00 AM.  This is the last day the college is open before holiday break.  There will be no makeup orientation.  Make sure your calendar remains flexible in order to attend the mandatory orientation.  The orientation will take approximately two (2) hours. Failure to attend the mandatory orientation will result in loss of your seat in the program.

To prepare yourself to meet the required deadlines for admission requirements, please begin gathering the required immunizations.  All information regarding the required immunizations is located in Clinical & Field Experience. (It is always a good idea to ensure that your immunizations and any certifications you hold are up to date.)

Also, be prepared to create your Verified Credentials account immediately after being accepted to the program to begin the criminal background investigation and drug screening.  Cost for this is $117.80 and payable only through Verified Credentials.
