SCC Closings and Delays

Occasionally inclement weather or other unforeseen factors may cause closings or delays at SCC. The college has procedures in place to make decisions regarding any closings/delays, and will communicate accordingly through channels including:

1. SCC website homepage- www.sccsc.edu and www.sccsc.edu/alert

2. SCC emails sent to students, faculty and staff SCC email accounts.

3. SCC college-wide notification system sends calls, emails and texts using the contact information you provide in your student, faculty or staff MySCC account. You can manage your contact information or add others to your alert list (such as parents) in your MySCC Portal Self Service account. Update or add your information at www.sccsc.edu/update-contact.

4. SCC social media outlets
Facebook- www.facebook.com/YourCollege
Instagram and Twitter for Spartanburg Community College

5. Local television stations

The most accurate sources of information for closings and delays are the SCC website or your SCC email. or you may call the college first to confirm plans for SCC Giles Campus, SCC Cherokee County Campus, SCC Downtown Campus, SCC Tyger River Campus and the SCC Union County Campus.

SCC administration monitors all potential closing/delay situations closely and makes decisions in the best interest of students, faculty and staff. When there is a change to the normal operating schedule, a decision will be made no later than 6:00 am for day classes and by 3:00 pm for evening classes.

If the college is closed, only essential personnel (see below) according to Procedure II-40.1 (PDF link below) may report to work. If the college is delayed, employees may report to work at the delayed time or at their regular work time using their best judgment for their safety on the roads.

College personnel will do everything possible to clear campus roadways, parking lots, walkways and entrances of any snow and ice prior to arrival; students and employees should use caution making their way across campus.

In the event the college is in operation and weather conditions worsen during the day, college administration will, above all else, consider the safety and welfare of students and employees in making the decision to close the college and will disseminate this information to students and employees as quickly as possible. Students and employees that feel conditions are unsafe should make decisions to ensure their personal safety.

Definitions for closings/delays:

Closed means all day and evening classes are canceled for students and employees do not report to work with the exception of essential personnel as provided by Procedure II-40.1 (see below).

Opening at (SCC will provide specific opening time) means students should arrive at the specified opening time and report to their class/lab/clinical that is normally in progress at that time. All remaining classes will be held at their regular time. Employees may use their discretion and report to work at their usual time or at the specified delayed opening time.

No day classes means all day classes are canceled for students and employees do not report to work with the exception of essential personnel as provided by Procedure II-40.1 (see below).

No evening classes means all evening classes are canceled for students because weather conditions have worsened throughout the day or will worsen and become hazardous during evening class time. Students do not report to class and evening employees do not report to work. A decision regarding cancellation of evening classes will be made by 3:00 pm for all evening classes that begin at or after 4:30 pm.
