Spartanburg Community College (SCC) is studying whether sports should become a part of student life as it provides education and training for the workforce.

The community college posted a survey link on its Facebook page to gauge student interest in sports programs. E-sports, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, cross country running, and competitive cheer were the activities listed.

All survey responses are anonymous as SCC is gathering information about how an athletics program might look.

“There are several community colleges in North Carolina and Virginia that have athletic programs,” SCC President Dr. Michael Mikota said. “We see the addition of sports as something that could enhance our students experience and have a positive impact on student retention.”

Mikota said the college needs to determine the level of student interest and conduct further analysis on the costs and benefits before it decides on what, if any, sports are added.

“There needs to be buy in from the students,” Mikota said.

The college has already taken one significant step towards creating an identity and brand for student activities.

Spartanburg Community College will have its own mascot this year. Mikota said the school currently plans to announce the mascot in early November once it completes the trademark process.
